Evaluation Two
How effective is the combination of your trailer with your ancillary task?
On one hand, I believe that the three components of my
coursework work together effectively. One reason I think this is because I made
sure to use similar, and some of the same, fonts across each component. This
allowed there to be a clear link between the three, which was said by
participants of my questionnaire to be effective. However, as well as using
similar fonts I made sure to use universally recognised fonts on each individual
component, in order to create the feel of a film trailer, film poster and
magazine cover.
Both my film poster and my magazine cover also focus mainly
on the characters, this is especially evident in my magazine cover. I decided
to use just Alice in my magazine cover in order to enhance the importance of
the emotions she had and the situation she was in. Some people felt that this
was effective however, some people felt that this made the trailer and the
magazine dissimilar, due to one involving two characters and the other just
one.
I also believe the images I chose for the film poster and the
magazine cover were effective as they both showed a clear link to each other
and the film trailer. The film poster’s image was taken in a photoshoot but I believe
that I managed to capture the love and emotions between the two characters by
having Maggie looking up to Alice. I believe the magazine cover also portrays Alice
well, however in a different light to the film poster. The cover, despite Alice
smiling and laughing, suggests isolation due to the difference of her being on
her own and not with Maggie. Although, I think I could’ve made this more clear
as many responses didn’t see this.
On the other hand, I think there were a few aspects to my
coursework which made them not as effective as I had hoped. One example is that
the magazine cover looks as though it could be from another genre, which
creates a great difference between the three components. Another aspect was
some responses from my questionnaire thought the image on the film poster was
slightly comedic. This was disappointing as I really liked the image, but after
seeing these comments I can see how it may come across as a ‘jokey’ picture. Finally,
I think my magazine cover should’ve included more information about the film
and not so much focus on Alice. This would’ve helped link it to the film trailer
better, especially with the cloudiness around the genre.

Magazine Cover = Final Font
I asked the same group of friends that chose the Magazine's name to choose which was their favourite font. I found that the vast majority (seven out of ten) liked the font 'Work In Progress' which I am very happy about this was also my favourite. I believe they chose this one because it was a bold font that could be easily read on the front of a magazine but then wasn't so harsh that it eliminated the soft romantic side to it. Unsurprisingly 'Because I'm Happy' came last, I think this was because it was too typical and too girly to suit my entire target audience. 'Brotherina' came second but still only got two out of ten votes, which showed me that 'Work In Progress' was a clear favourite. 
Magazine Cover = Title Font
Using DaFont I found several fonts which I thought worked well with my chosen magazine name, but I have compressed it down to my favourite three...
1. Because I'm Happy
I liked this font because it was flirty and cute, like the connotations of J'adore. I also like the fact it was soft looking and the letter all had a little twirl on them, however I do feel as though the font is rather thin and small which wouldn't work well as a magazine title.
2. Brotherina
Despite 'Brotherina' seemly the most harsh looking out of the three fonts, I do like how it is bolder. This will help it hold it's ground against the rest of the magazine cover. Although it is less than 'Because I'm Happy' each letter still has a slight twirl which slightly softens the bolder size.

I believe that this font is a perfect mix of the other two, it is bolder than 'Because I'm Happy' yet not as strong as 'Brotherina' and still has the distinctive swirls on each letter. I like the fact that this font looks as though it's written in fountain pen, this has connotations of being unique and this links well to the trailers theme and the production company.

Magazine Cover = Final Name
Magazine Cover = Name
Before I started to create my Magazine Cover I needed to decide on a name for the magazine, so I spent a while brainstorming some ideas as the name of a magazine tells a lot to the potential reader about what could be inside. Here are my three favourite ideas and why I like them...
1. Edge
I like this idea because it straightaway creates a tone of uniqueness and sounds almost experimental, which is very linked to our trailer and production company. The connotations of 'edginess' are grungy, almost gothic, which leads to the use of dark colours like black, grey and purple, which is a slight negative because I want my magazine to be bright and happy, which I don't think would match the name 'Edge'. I believe my target audience would like this title because it is different and unique, just like how all teenagers are trying to be.
2. Solo
This word, unfortunately, automatically brings to mind the idea of a person being alone, single, just as one. However, I believe that once watching my film trailer and seeing how different and unique the story line is, this title will make a lot more sense. I was hoping to use an image of just the protagonist for my magazine cover so this picture of her alone would also link to the title. This title would sit well with my target audience because it is catchy and easy to remember which is convenient, just like how teenagers like things to be.
3. J'adore
I really like this title as the word itself just screams love, tenderness, intimacy and warmth, which all link so well with my film trailer. The colours red, pink, soft blues all spring to mind, which are bright and eye catching like I would want on my magazine cover. There is already a magazine called J'adore, however it is for men's sporting wear so I don't think that there will ever be a confusion between the two. I think this title would be attractive to my target audience, especially the females, do to the relevance in this time of their lives. Teenagers are learning about love and loving themselves.

Magazine Cover = Photographs
Due the unfortunate issues that occurred with the previous photos Millie and I took, I decided to meet up with Ann and take a couple more of my own. I also decided to do this because in my magazine cover research I found that many covers had a single image with just one person in, and all the pictures I took before had both Ann and Flo in the shot. Here are some of my favourites out of the pictures I took...
I decided to use image 2 because I thought Ann looked happy and relaxed, which is the sort of tone I wanted to portray for the magazine. I also choose this picture because Ann is looking clearly into the camera where as in some others she is looking down, or the shot is slightly out of focus.

Film Poster = Designing Credits
When starting
to create my film credits I decided to first do some research into them, here
is what I found…
1.
What are film credits?
They are the legal lines that appear in movie posters giving
credit to the cast and crew that made the film, as well as the producers,
distributor and financier behind it.
2.
How big should the credits be?
By convention, the height is normally no smaller than 25% of
the height of the title. This is why the font used is generally so tall and
compressed.
3. How many lines do credits normally have?
Credits normally have an average of four lines, usually
positioned at the bottom of the poster under the film’s title. They can sometimes circulate around the edge of
the film poster.
4. What font is commonly used for the posters?
There isn’t an official
font used universally for the credits, however Univers 39 Ultra Condensed is
most common.
5.
What colour should they be?
The credits have to readable yet well integrated into the
poster, hence why they are commonly seen in grey so that they aren’t too
prominent. A softer version of a main colour on the poster could also be used.
I then
decided to use Photoshop to create the credits as it would then be easy to place
on top of my poster. I went online and found a template of what needed to be
included…

I decided to
use a font called ‘Microsoft Yi Balti Regular’ as I like the slight typewriter
finish it gave to the poster, making it fit into the sort of indie, unique feel
of the film.

Film Poster = Photoshoot
After spending time individually planning what we wanted our ancillary tasks to look like, Millie and I organised a date with Ann and Flo to take some pictures. Both Millie and I had decided we wanted a white plain background to our photos so we found a white wall in the Art Department at school. After taking the photos we wanted of Ann and Flo we then went to upload the photos from Millie's camera, with an SD Card adapter from the library, onto my laptop. However, something went wrong when uploading the pictures and resulted in the files becoming corrupted. So we then tried to upload the images onto Millie's laptop but the files has now completely disappeared. Millie and I were stuck with what to do so we went to the IT Department at school and asked for their help.
After the IT staff all taking it in turns to have a look at what had happened they decided that it would be best if Millie and I left the SD Card with them as it seemed to be a bigger task than we all expected. So Millie and I left them with our email addresses and hoped they would be able to recover the files. A couple hours later I received an email from the IT Department pictured below,
Unfortunately the majority of mine and Millie's pictures weren't able to be recovered which left us with a much smaller range of choice than we initially had hoped for. However, listed below are a few of the images I had hoped to use that were luckily recovered...
